Vaginal delivery : a life altering experience

Childbirth is a life changing experience. A baby is born through various options among which vaginal delivery is the most natural and common procedure. Vaginal delivery refers to the process of giving birth naturally through the birth canal. Vaginal delivery is divided into three main stages, such as :

The First Stage : Labour

Early labour :

  • The cervix begins to dilate.
  • contractions begin mildly but grow stronger.
  • This lasts for a few hours for first time mothers.

Active labour :

  • The cervix dilates from 6 to 10 centimetres.
  • Contractions are more intense.
  • It’s time to visit the hospital.

Transition Phase :

  • In this phase the cervix is completely dilated.
  • Contractions occur every 2-3 minutes and lasts upto 90 seconds.

The Second Stage : Delivery of the baby

  • Mother pushes the baby with each contraction to help the baby move to the birth canal.
  • The baby’s head starts to become visible at the vaginal opening.
  • The baby’s shoulder and body follows.

The Third Stage : Delivery

  • The baby is born.
  • This lasts 5 to 30 minutes.
  • Mild contractions continue.
  • The placenta is delivered.

What are the benefits of Vaginal delivery ?

  • Skin-to-skin contact after birth helps regulate a baby's temperature, heart rate and breathing.
